Hello, hello, I promise I haven't forgotten about you. I've just been busy, and sick with a sinus infection. I saw the doctor the other day and bought some medicine, which will hopefully kick in soon.

We are in the midst of a rain cycle here in Bahia. The past few days have been "cold" (definitely a relative term), windy and rainy. Based on what I know of the weather around here, it should clear up soon and go back to being hot, dry, and breezy - perfect beach weather.

I have definitely begun to formulate a routine for myself. Every day after Portuguese class some friends and I head over to the historical district of Salvador, called Pelourinho, to eat lunch and hang out until our 4:00 class. Pelourinho is a huge tourist district, and as a result there are swarms of street vendors selling every kind of trinket and food item you can think of. Most of the vendors are kids, and they are finally beginning to realize that my friends and I end up at a certain cafe every afternoon. We now know each other by name, and I've spent many afternoons discussing politics with the older ones. I like entering Pelourinho and being greeted by people who know me, instead of merely viewing me as another customer. Pelourinho is definitely the kind of place where you want to be on the side of the locals, as opposed to the zillions of other tourists.

Nothing special going on around here, though I am looking forward to this weekend, where our group will have a churrasco (barbeque) on the beach. The end of the 5-week orientation will be here before we know it, and that's when the real work will begin.
